Myopia and Presbyopia

Here are two common eye problems. Myopia is better known as nearsightedness. That means you can read and see nearby objects well, but not faraway ones. Hyperopia is also known as farsightedness. If you have it, you can see distant objects well, but not those nearby.

Bifocals and Trifocals

Eyeglasses can help you see better with either of these conditions. With farsightedness, you may be able to choose simple reading glasses that need no prescription. If your close-up and/or intermediate vision also need a little tweaking, we may suggest eyeglasses with bifocal or trifocal lenses. Likewise, if you're nearsighted but still in need of aid for better distance and intermediate vision, we may suggest them too. This allows you to use one pair of eyeglasses to accomplish your everyday tasks.

Contact Lenses for Farsightedness and Nearsightedness

Perhaps you prefer contact lenses. Our optometrist will give you a comprehensive eye exam as well as one for vision to determine if you are a suitable candidate for contact lenses. If you're nearsighted or farsighted and prefer contact lenses, our eye doctor may suggest spherical ones.

If you're nearsighted and prefer not to wear eyeglasses during the day, our eye care specialist may present the idea of treatment with orthokeratology. With this solution, you wear Ortho-K lenses only at night when they gently reshape your cornea. This course of action is highly suitable for children and people who do not want eye surgery.

UV Light-Blocking Sunglasses and Contacts

Ultraviolet light damages our eyes. Consider prescription sunglasses with tinted lenses. Also, think about eyeglasses that automatically adjust to sunlight. They have been available commercially since the 1990s. Much more recently, contact lenses that also adjust automatically are available. You may want eyewear that is polarized to reduce reflections and glare from snow, water, and sand. Discuss these options to protect your eyes from ultraviolet light and reflections and glare with our optometrist.

Lenses for Sports

If you participate in sports, in some instances, it's worthwhile to get eyeglasses made with polycarbonate, a strong material. Successful athletes also want to be able to track objects. Therefore, ask about tinted lenses that increase visibility.
