Glaucoma

One condition we might work with is glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease that harms the optic nerve and is caused when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye.

In the normal eye, a fluid called aqueous humor rests inside the eye. Normally, aqueous humor drains from the eye through an inner drainage port. When the fluid drains normally, the intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) stays normal. If it can't drain, the fluid - and pressure - increase abnormally, potentially harming the optic nerve and causing glaucoma.

How Would Glaucoma Affect Me?

The increased pressure damages the optic nerve. Since the optic nerve transmits what we see to the brain, glaucoma reduces our vision. Although glaucoma can become severe, if detected early, it can cause fewer problems with your vision.

The most common type of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma. This occurs when the fluid builds gradually and without any pain. The second type - closed-angle glaucoma - is more serious. This type occurs when the drainage port becomes completely blocked and damage starts to occur rapidly. Closed angle glaucoma is considered an eye emergency
